  • Flux Information Sciences | Private/Public | Review

PopMatters | Wilson Neate The cover art of Private/Public alone is worth the price of admission.A blue-toned photograph catches an unsavory bunch apparently in the act of recreating a scene from The Night Porter inside a dimly lit, cell-like space that's part bar and part interrogation room. A monocled gent sporting a leather top hat and tuxedo However, the scene depicted on the cover pales in comparison with the scene in the studio when Flux Information Sciences recorded this album, if we are to believe the press release. By all accounts, most of Private/Public was taped live before an invited audience of friends who were obliged to stand naked and blindfolded while the band went about its business. If you've already been put off by the (admittedly cursory) account of the cover art and the band's unconventional approach to recording, then the sound of Flux Information Sciences' maiden release for Michael Gira's Young God Records probably won't be to your liking. Private/Public comprises 19 variations on the theme of industrial noise, each averaging around two minutes and featuring Top-40-friendly titles such as "Liposuction" and "World Class Fuck". Much of the material suggests a fondness on the part of core FIS......

  • M. Gira Live | Review

THE WIRE | DAVID KEENANOn Location OBLIQUE LU NIGHTS NANTES LE LIEU UNIQUE, FranceThings started off on a real high with a solo acoustic set from ex-Swan Michael Gira. Despite only having six strings to fall back on, Gira filled the cavernous hall with the weight of his blues. Caught in a cone of white light in the middle of a pitch-black stage, he contorted his features as he tore vocals from his belly, showering the people nearest the stage in sweat and spit. Whereas Swans dealt in epic melancholy, Gira's new material felt much more intimate, while remaining every bit as physically and emotionally heavy as his earlier amplified rock....

  • Larsen | Rever | Review

indieworkshop.com | mortytheir music does justice to the spectacular near-legend of how Rever came to beIt would be a minor tragedy if the story of how Larsen operates or how they came to be produced by Michael Gira were the only interesting thing about them. To my great satisfaction their music does justice to the spectacular near-legend of how Rever came to be. (I won't attempt to summarize the story, visit the Young God Records site for yourself and read about it). Over 10 hours of music was recorded for this release which clocks in at a little over 49 minutes. Ritualistic pieces have been trimmed for the obvious practical reasons as well as coherence and digestibilty. I'm more than envious of M.Gira for getting to experience first hand what this album "Rever" can only give us a glimpse of. What we do get to hear invokes the greatness of the Swans and Sonic Youth without ever coming off as a copy. The atmosphere is moody and dark much like Evol/Sister era Sonic Youth or Great Annihilator era Swans though more subdued than any of them. The song "Maya" has an on and off guitar droning very similar to Sonic......
